Sewage & Wastewater Lagoon Aeration
Aquatic Engineering offers bottom diffuser systems to deliver superior oxygen transfer and mixing efficiency for sewage and wastewater lagoons. Designed for durability and low maintenance, these diffusers provide unfirom aeration across the entire lagoon floor, promoting optimal microbial activity and faster organic matter breakdown. The result is clearer effluent, reduced sludge accumulation, and significant odour control, all while minimizing energy consumption. Whether for municipal or industrial applications, our aeration systems ensure reliable, long-term wastewater treatment practice.
Invermere Lagoon 3 Aeration Upgrade
Invermere, British Columbia
Following the successful aeration upgrades completed in Lagoon1 and 2 over the previous two years, the District of Invermere partnered with Aquatic Engineering Canada (AEC) to restore and modernize aeration in Lagoon 3. The lagoon's coarse-bubble aeration system had been offline for several years due to air-line leaks and aging diffuser equipment, impacting both compliance and system performance. In Fall 2025, AEC installed twelve Mega X2 fine-bubble diffusers, along with a new 12-port steel manifold and a custom filtration solution to protect against rust and ebris originating from the District's steel aeration piping. The result is a fully operational, fine-bubble aerated lagoon with enhanced oxygen transfer and improved long-term system reliability.
District of Invermere Sewage Lagoon Aeration Upgrade for Odour Reduction
Invermere, British Columbia
In 2024 our team was tasked with upgrading the aeration system at the District of Invermere sewage lagoons, where low oxygen levels were resulting in odour issues. We installed a custom fine bubble aeration system with 120 Can-Air Mega X2 diffusers—90 in Cell 1 and 30 in Cell 2. By integrating these diffusers with the existing blowers and headers, we ensured the new system fit seamlessly with what was already in place. The goal of this project was to increase dissolved oxygen levels and subsequently reduce the odours, making a tangible difference for the community and enhancing the effectiveness of the sewage treatment.
The Town of Eckville contacted our team to come up with a solution for an effective and low-maintenance aeration system for two wastewater lagoons. The town previously relied on old and failing surface aerators. The surface aerators posed health and safety risks for operators needing to go on the lagoons to service the equipment. In 2023, we installed two custom bottom-diffused Can-Air Mega aeration systems (total of 19 diffusers) into the lagoons. These new submerged systems have proven to be far easier to operate and maintain, compared to the old system.
Our team of biologists, engineers, and installation crew have installed a 70 Can-Air Mega X2 diffuser aeration system within the town's facultative wastewater lagoon to help improve oxygen levels, BOD, and TSS. The goal of this project is to help the town increase its existing wastewater facility to prepare for rapid community growth while continuing to meet stringent environmental standards.
