Stormwater Pond Aeration

Our bottom diffuser aeration systems are engineered to improve water quality and aesthetics in stormwater ponds. By increasing dissolved oxygen and promoting circulation, our systems prevent stagnation, reduce algae blooms, and minimize foul odours. Enhanced oxygen transfer also supports beneficial bacteria, accelerating the breakdown of organic matter and reducing sediment buildup. Durable and energy-efficient, our diffusers provide long-term performance for municipalities, developers, and property management seeking cleaner, healthier stormwater systems.

In the Summer of 2025, AEC installed a complete turnkey fine-bubble aeration system into a long, narrow stromwater pond in Langdon, Alberta. Rocky View County manages this pond as part of its stormwater network and has been dealing with persistent issues, inlcuding duckweed overgrowth, algae blooms, heavy muck accumulation, and odours. Homes a public walking paths surround the pond, leading to ongoing resident complaints about water quality and aesthetics. The County previously installed a small aerating fountain to imporve circulation, but due to the pond's elongated shape, it could not adequately prevent dead zones. AEC designed a system tailored to the pond's geamtery and integrated with the existing fountain.

In Summer 2025, AEC installed a complete fine-bubble aeration system, along with a 5 HP floating fountain with colour-changing LED lights, to help circulate, oxygenate, and enhance the beauty of McLaughlin Pond in Spruce Grove. This pond is part of the City's stormwater system and has been receiving significant nutrient loading from stormwater inflows, resulting in heavy aquatic weed growth and recurring algae blooms. AEC delivered a turnkey aeration system to fulfill the project's functional goals, while the stunning fountain and lighting addressed its aesthetic goals. A custom control cabinet was added to house all onshore equipment, including the compressors, fountain and light control panels, and electrical panels. This cabinet was designed to be visually neutral, secure, and built for long-term outdoor operation.

Installed onshore and a network of 20 fine-bubble diffusers operating in the shallow pond. Installed in Spring 2025 by AEC to replace an ineffective, high-cost nano-bubbler system and improve DO = odour outcomes from glycol runoff.

In Spring 2025, Aquatic Engineering Canada (AEC) installed a 20-diffuser fine-bubble aeration system in a shallow stormwater pond at Calgary International Airport (YYC). The Airport Authority contacted AEC in Winter 2024/25 seeking a reliable, low-maintenance solution to address chronic odour issues caused by glycol runoff from aircraft de-icing operations. The glycol loading consistently strips dissolved oxygen (DO) from the pond, creating odours and compliance challenges. AEC designed and delivered a simple, cost-effective, and highly serviceable fine-bubble aeration system tailored to the unique constraints of this extremely shallow waterbody (1-3 ft depth).

Water Management for Residential Communities including aeration, fountains and water treatments

Pond Pro Canada/ AEC was responsible for installing an aeration system in the expansive stormwater pond system running through the community of Watermark at Bearspaw. This aeration system included 32 diffusers to maintain water quality, reduce algae and weeds and prevent any odour from the water.
